How to Build a Planter Box
This is a guide to building a planter box/flower box for your deck railings. For me, fairly large, 7’ long boxes for flowers to decorate my deck glulams. I couldn’t find any reliable information on the internet for this, so I’ve decided to make a page teaching others how to build that big mounted planter box. The first time I built these planter boxes was 20 years ago, and I can give you tips on what lasts and what doesn’t.
Here is a list of tools you will likely need (there may be more):
- Workbench for sawing
- Electric saw
- Screw gun (we’re going to be predrilling, too)
- Measuring tape
- Carpenters pencil and chalk tape
- Wood glue
- Stain (optional)
- Mounting brackets
- Another person to help
First off, redwood is preferable – I’ve found it lasts a lot longer, but Cedar is cheaper and is a good alternative.
